Disha is one of the offsprings of Anil Kumar Sen Memorial trust(AKSMT) - A registered non- profit charitable organisation created in 2004, in memory of by beloved father Late Anil Kumar Sen, who was not only a great a connoisseur of music, but a good organiser too.He had promoted and brought to the limelight many talented artists, leaving aside my mother Smt.Sumitra Sen , myself and my sister Smt.Sraboni Sen.Hence, Disha was formed.
The trust AKSMT has two wings.Disha - the cultural unit caters the musical needs of young buds of Bengal through rigorous trainings under the tutelege of sincere and knowlegeable trainers.Deeksha- the educational and research unit, on the other hand, undertakes training programmes and counseling sessions on Management, Finance career orientation, soft skill and psychology. The trust is run by a Board of Directors selected from different professional genres. They are eminent personalities of Kolkata.
Disha started its musical journey in October 2003 with only five students. Subsequently, over the years, the sapling turned into a robust tree, with more than 300 students accomodated in three branches of Disha namely,"Dakhina"(South), "Uttara"(North), and "Pubali"(East). In every branch regular general classes and special grooming sessions of the advanced students are held. Financial crunch is no bar here. Needy candidates are provided with concessional fees or at times, exhempted fees in this philan tthropic institution.
There is also a kids section, where proper voice training and basic knowledge of classical music is imparted to children of the age group 4 to 15, along with lessons of classical dances like Bharatnatyam, Kathak and creative dance to the learners. The dance teachers are veterans like - Kaushik Chakraborty and Rahul Dev Mondal.
Every year, theory and practical examinations are held in Disha by external experts, in order to maintain transperancy. The winners get attractive prizes and others certificates of merit.
Disha also conducts annual cultural workshops on different aspects of music, dance health and psychology by renowned and expert figures in their respective fields, where students are kept updated about the new contemporary techniques. Cultural programes are held from time to time to assess the merits of students in music, dance, anchoring, script-writing, narration and organising capabilities. Disha has also released a few albums(CD) of the upcoming talents of Disha, which have been widely appreciated.
Besides regular training sessions, students are also taught to celebrate auspicious occasions like Rabindra and Najrul Jayanti, Bijaya sanmilani, Independence Day, Naba barsha, birthdays of famous legendary figures - not to leave out the D-days of the trainers of Disha, with atmost awe and reverence. In the annual cultural soirees, they felicitate respectfully the music exponents of the yester-years,lend out their helping hands- sometimes to buy expensive books of medicine or engineering for the needy talented students, to arrange funds for a terminal patient, or to buy little things for the street-children. This way, Disha tries to involve the students to do their bits of social welfare.
Every winter, lovely picnics are arranged where the teachers and students together spend a whole day in an utter jovial mood-sulking in the sun, riding swings or just dancing in the tune of current popular humbers. These events play their parts to bring the students closer to the heart of each other.
In fine, Dishas objective is not only to bring out a good singer or dancer out of every students, but to motivate and guide them to grow up into a perfect human being-as much as they can.
